Sustainable Growth · 10 January 2026

Sustainable Growth Is a Pace, Not a Target.

The organisations that last are not the ones that grew fastest. They are the ones that learned how to grow without breaking the people and systems that got them there.

Growth targets are useful. They focus attention and make trade-offs concrete. But treated as the whole picture, they can quietly encourage a way of leading that trades tomorrow's capacity for this quarter's number.

Sustainable growth is a different discipline. It asks not only what we are trying to reach, but what pace we can hold — honestly — given the people, the systems, and the leadership bandwidth we actually have. It is the difference between sprinting until something breaks and building the fitness to keep going.

In practice, this usually means fewer initiatives, better sequenced. Clearer accountability, so nothing important is quietly owned by everyone and no one. And an honest conversation, at least once a quarter, about what the current pace is really costing.

The businesses that get this right are rarely the loudest. But they are almost always the ones still standing, and still growing, when the noisy ones have moved on to their next thing.
